Find suppliers in Romania: a guide for foreign companies
To find reliable suppliers in Romania, compare several offers for the same specification and check each company by its CUI, the Romanian registration code, in public records. Markonex is a B2B marketplace for companies in Romania to buy and sell: buyers publish requests for quotation (RFQs), the platform automatically finds matching ANAF-verified suppliers and manufacturers, and offers, negotiation, agreements and contracts happen on the same platform. This page explains what that means for a company based abroad.

What Markonex is and who is on it
Markonex is open to companies from any industry that buy or sell products or services to other companies. Suppliers list products in a catalogue and answer RFQs; buyers publish RFQs or search products and companies directly. Products and RFQs are organised in 15 categories, from raw materials, construction materials and industrial equipment to food and beverages, IT and professional services.
The platform is built around companies registered in Romania: automatic verification uses the CUI at ANAF, the Romanian tax authority, and the company data and financial statements shown on profiles come from ANAF.
Can a company registered outside Romania use Markonex?
Markonex is designed for the Romanian market. ANAF verification, the official company data and the public financial statements shown on profiles are only available for companies with a Romanian CUI. A company without a Romanian CUI cannot obtain the "ANAF verified" status, and companies that are not ANAF-verified are shown as such to their counterparties.
If your company is registered outside Romania and you want to source from Romanian suppliers through Markonex, write to us at the contact address at the bottom of this page before registering, and we will tell you how your company can use the platform.
How a buyer finds suppliers on Markonex
You describe what you need in one request for quotation: title, description, category, delivery location and how long it stays open, 30 days by default. Once it is published, automatic matching ranks suppliers mainly by how well what they sell fits your request, with smaller boosts for verified companies, rating, distance and category. Interested suppliers send offers, and you negotiate with each of them in structured rounds, up to 20, with messages and documents in one place.
If you already know a supplier, you send a direct price request from its profile. In product search you find companies with matching products, filter by location, distance, price and category, and compare up to 3 products side by side, including the supplier's public financial data.
Language: English and Romanian
The interface is available in English and Romanian. Company and product descriptions and RFQ texts are translated automatically between the two languages and stored, so you read a supplier's description in English and can reveal the original Romanian text with one click. Search works across both languages: a query in English also finds suppliers who described their products in Romanian. Email notifications are sent in both English and Romanian.
How Romanian companies are verified
When a company registers on Markonex with its CUI, the platform checks it at ANAF. If the company exists and is active, its legal name, main activity code (CAEN), trade register number, VAT status, e-Factura registration and registered office are filled in from ANAF, and the profile shows the "ANAF verified", "VAT payer" and "e-Factura" badges. If the CUI does not exist or the company is inactive or struck off, registration with that CUI is blocked.
Within minutes the profile also receives the company's public annual financial statements for the last three years: revenue, profit or loss, average number of employees, equity and debts. Company status is rechecked at ANAF twice a month, and companies that become inactive or are struck off disappear from search and matching. You can also check a Romanian company yourself:
- ANAF's public taxpayer lookup, by CUI: active or inactive status, VAT registration, registered office.
- VIES, the European Commission's VAT number check, for the Romanian VAT code (RO followed by the CUI) used in intra-EU trade.
- The National Trade Register Office (ONRC): incorporation date, shareholders, directors; an official certificate (certificat constatator) is issued for a fee.
- The insolvency proceedings bulletin (BPI), published by ONRC, for insolvency, reorganisation or bankruptcy.
Currencies and payments
Every product price and every offer carries its own currency, and each user can choose a preferred currency for display. Converted amounts use regularly updated exchange rates and are indicative only; the price that counts is the one agreed in the offer.
Markonex does not process payments and is not a party to contracts between companies: payment, delivery and invoicing are agreed directly between buyer and supplier and recorded in the agreement and, if needed, in a contract generated from a template or uploaded.
Export basics: Incoterms, VAT and documents
For deliveries from Romania, agree in writing on the Incoterms rule, the named place and the edition, for example "FCA Timișoara, Incoterms 2020". Within the EU there are no customs formalities, but to invoice an intra-community supply without Romanian VAT the supplier generally needs your valid VAT number, checkable in VIES, and proof of transport out of Romania. Outside the EU, export and import customs formalities apply.
On Markonex, the agreed price, quantity, delivery date and place and payment terms are part of the agreement; the Incoterms rule, certificates and other conditions go into the negotiation messages or the contract. Rules you will meet most often:
- EXW and FCA: you organise the main transport from the supplier's premises or the agreed handover point.
- DAP and DDP: the supplier delivers to your destination; under DDP the supplier also pays import duties and taxes.
- FOB and CIF: only for sea and inland waterway transport, for example shipments through a port.
- Before the agreement, ask for certificates of conformity, the origin of the goods and the packing specification.
Frequently asked questions
Can a company from outside Romania register on Markonex?
Markonex is built for companies in Romania, and automatic verification works with a Romanian CUI at ANAF. A company without a Romanian CUI cannot get the "ANAF verified" status and is shown as not ANAF-verified to its counterparties. If your company is registered abroad, contact us before registering and we will confirm how you can use the platform.
Can I use Markonex in English?
Yes. The interface is available in English and Romanian, company and product descriptions and RFQs are translated automatically between the two languages, and search works across both.
How do I check a Romanian company's VAT number?
A Romanian VAT code is the CUI with the RO prefix. You can check it in ANAF's public taxpayer lookup and, for intra-EU trade, in the European Commission's VIES system. On Markonex, the VAT status from ANAF is shown on each verified company's profile.
Does Markonex handle payments or shipping?
No. Markonex does not process payments and is not a party to contracts between companies. Payment, transport and invoicing are agreed directly between buyer and supplier and recorded in the agreement and, if needed, the contract.
