How to check a Romanian company by CUI: ANAF, trade register, accounts
A Romanian company is checked by its CUI (registration code) in four public sources: ANAF, the tax authority (active status, VAT registration, e-Factura), the trade register kept by ONRC (registered office, shareholders, directors), the financial statements published by the Ministry of Finance and the insolvency proceedings bulletin. On Markonex, the B2B marketplace for companies in Romania to buy and sell, the ANAF data and financial statements appear automatically on every verified company's profile.

Step 1: get the correct CUI
Ask the company for its CUI or take it from an invoice, an offer or its website. The CUI is a number of up to 10 digits, the last one being a check digit. If the company is a VAT payer, you will also see it with the RO prefix, which belongs to the VAT code, not to the CUI.
Check the name too: a company may use a different trading name, but the CUI must match the legal name on its documents.
Step 2: check with ANAF that the company is active
ANAF provides free public taxpayer information on its website, searchable by CUI: name, registered office, trade register number, whether the company is active or tax-inactive, whether it is registered for VAT and whether it is listed in the RO e-Factura Register. The same data is available through a public web service used by invoicing software and platforms.
- A company declared tax-inactive is a serious warning sign: as a rule, the buyer cannot deduct the VAT on its invoices.
- If the company is not a VAT payer, its invoices carry no VAT; check that this matches the offer you received.
Step 3: look the company up in the trade register (ONRC)
The National Trade Register Office (ONRC) keeps company records: incorporation date, registered office, business purpose, share capital, shareholders and directors, recent filings. Some basic information can be consulted online, and an official certificate with the company's current situation (certificat constatator) is issued for a fee, online or at the counter.
Look at how long the company has existed, recent changes of office, shareholders or directors, and whether its registered activity matches what it sells you.
Step 4: read the financial statements
The indicators from the annual financial statements are public and can be consulted on the Ministry of Finance website, under information about economic operators. Follow the trend over several years: turnover, profit or loss, debts, equity and average number of employees.
- Very low revenue compared with the value of your order may mean the company lacks the capacity it promises.
- Negative equity and growing debts call for caution, especially with advance payments.
- A newly founded company has no financial statements yet; the other checks and a smaller first order then matter more.
Step 5: check for insolvency and litigation
The insolvency proceedings bulletin (Buletinul Procedurilor de Insolvență, BPI), published by ONRC, contains the documents of insolvency, reorganisation and bankruptcy proceedings. On the Romanian courts portal (portal.just.ro) you can search by name for cases in which the company is a party, for example disputes with suppliers or customers.
A single dispute is not necessarily a problem, but many cases with creditors or an open insolvency procedure change the terms on which it makes sense to work with the company.
What you see directly on Markonex
On Markonex, the check happens automatically at registration: the platform queries ANAF by CUI and, if the company is active, the profile shows the legal name, CAEN code, trade register number, VAT status, e-Factura and registered office, with the "ANAF verified", "VAT payer" and "e-Factura" badges. Within minutes the public financial statements are fetched too and shown on the profile for the last three years.
Company status is rechecked with ANAF twice a month, and companies that become inactive or are struck off no longer appear in search and automatic matching. Companies that are not ANAF-verified are clearly marked on cards and detail pages, and company search finds a company directly by its CUI.

Frequently asked questions
Is checking a company with ANAF free?
Yes. ANAF's public taxpayer information is free to consult on its website, by CUI. Official documents from the trade register, such as the certificat constatator, are issued for a fee.
What does it mean if a company is inactive at ANAF?
Tax inactivity is declared by ANAF, for example when a company does not file its tax returns or does not operate at its declared registered office. For a buyer it is a serious signal: as a rule, VAT on invoices received from an inactive company cannot be deducted.
Can I search for a company by CUI directly on Markonex?
Yes. In the platform's company search you enter the CUI, with or without the RO prefix, and find the company if it has a Markonex account. Its profile shows the data taken from ANAF and the indicators from its public financial statements.
